Quo Vadis Internet
The first time I used the Internet was when I needed access to it for a programming discipline. The Internet was not as we know it today, some networks were disconnected in the first half of the 90's. When a colleague asked me to test something that was being created at CERN, I hardly knew the revolution that would be this new concept: loading hypertext that brings us to new information in a simple way, soon allowing the widespread use of the Internet. I see now that history was being made and that the World would never be the same!

Shortly afterwards I was working at one of the first ISPs. Who remembers what access was like? Modem whistling, parents scolding that the phone line was blocked, but Netline, a phone line just to connect to the Internet, soon appeared!

However, I still lacked an evolutionary stage and in 1998 I started the journey in .PT, where until today I am part of the Internet with Portuguese brand, or this is part of me, I don't know.

I saw many changes in the Internet in Portugal and in the World, some sad and with serious global implications, such as the September 11, witnessing, incredulously, the death that happened on the other side of the Atlantic.

Despite the "bad” uses of the Internet, this is the best tool that Humanity has, and should be used to include, inform and improve the World. The Internet brings us closer, allows us to laugh and share life, and to work with people from all over the world (hello Australia!).

I am proud that developments on the Internet, particularly in .pt, have allowed great progress in the way of accessing information, communicating and working at a distance, doing from far away close. I saw, even more proudly, the .PT reacting quickly and being an example in a very serious pandemic, protecting its people, generalizing something that already existed, home working. However, .PT did not stop there, it helped develop Portugal online, with several initiatives and boosted several others in the social sphere. All done by isolated people, but working together in a cohesive team, always guaranteeing services and information security.

In this 21st century, I don't know what levels of integration with the Internet we will achieve or if we will have other networks. For example: an Exanet to communicate with Space. Am I dreaming big? I think not. I am only sure that the future will surprise us!
